This book by a Jesuit priest and scripture scholar, a.k.a. Cardinal Jean Danielou of the Roman Catholic Church, is a classic study in typology. Typology, a Christian theological method that usually studies how Old Testament texts prefigure the faith of Jesus Christ, dates to the early Church Fathers. Danielou puts a unique twist on it here, studying the Biblical typology that appears in the liturgies of the Christian sacraments, specifically the three sacraments of initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. Citing a wealth of patristic sources, he shows how liturgical symbols like the waters of baptism find their type in OT stories like the crossing of the Red Sea. It's a very dense book, being more academic than popular, and I wouldn't recommend trying to breeze through it. I spent several months on it and set it aside to finish at a later date. But if you're serious about this sort of thing, it's really the last word on this particular topic, offering a 1950s foreshadowing of the renewed emphasis on liturgical symbolism that flourished in Catholic theology after the Second Vatican Council. Kudos to Notre Dame University and its "Christian Classics" imprint for reprinting this text.
Wonderful exposition on the Liturgy. The fullness of the sign value in the liturgy is expounded on through the Biblical and Sacramental typology. Also drawing from the Early Church Fathers we see the full expression of this in the early church's art, architecture and celebration of the sacraments.

Great! Breaks down the details of the sacraments using the early church fathers that have written about them and relates them to the Bible based on the fathers' commentary and catechesis.
Great book !
This book is tough going! It has a lot of interesting information about typology in the Bible and how the Church Fathers, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, took that and gave it form in the liturgy. Nevertheless, the language is often unnecessarily opaque and the text as a whole could have been streamlined to reduce redundancies, which are abundant. It is kind of a chore to read even though I love this subject! I definitely wouldn't recommend it for beginners!
