This is a thoroughly revised edition of the Historical Atlas of Colorado, which was coauthored by Tom Noel and published in 1994. Chock-full of the best and latest information on Colorado, this new edition features thirty new chapters, updated text, more than 100 color maps and 100 color photos, and a best-of listing of Colorado authors and books, as well as a guide to hundreds of tourist attractions. Colorado received its name (Spanish for “red”) after much debate and many possibilities, including Idaho (an “Indian” name meaning “gem of the mountains” later discovered to be a fabrication) and Yampa (Ute for “bear”). Noel includes other little-known but significant facts about the state, from its status as first state in the Union to elect women to its legislature, to its controversial “highest state” designation, elevated by the 2013 legalization of recreational cannabis. Noel and cartographer Carol Zuber-Mallison map and describe Colorado’s spectacular geography and its fascinating past. The book’s eight parts survey natural Colorado, from rivers and mountains to dinosaurs and mammals; history, from prehistoric peoples to twenty-first-century Color-oddities; mining and manufacturing, from the gold rush to alternative energy sources; agriculture, including wineries and brewpubs; transportation, from stagecoach lines to light rail; modern Colorado, from the New Deal to the present (including politics, history, and information on lynchings, executions, and prisons); recreation, covering not only hiking and skiing but also literary locales and Colorado in the movies; and tourism, encompassing historic landmarks, museums, and even cemeteries. In short, this book has information—and surprises—that anyone interested in Colorado will relish.

What a tremendous book. 200% improvement over the previous edition. Congratulations to Tom. His usual quality work. This book could be used as a text for total Colorado History presented as only Tom can do.Ingeniously organized
This is a very interesting book that is filled with maps, charts, and information about Colorado. Outside of the maps and charts, however, there are very few photographs, and no full-page ones at all other than the opening page. Although this is something that I'm interested in, it won't work as a coffee table book since it doesn't really have any pictures, and it's not what I thought I was getting when I made the purchase. Based on the many glowing 5-star reviews about how beautiful the book is, I wrongly assumed it would contain a decent amount of photographs. I understand that maps and charts can be beautiful as well, it just not what I thought I was getting. I will keep this since I like maps and history, but a guest picking this up would probably be disappointed unless they're a map nerd like me!
If you want to know about the real Colorado, this book is the one for you. I'm using it for research. Tom Noel wrote it, so I know the book is carefully researched and correct. The maps used for each subject: Explorers, mining, labor unions, cattle ranching and farming and many other topics are well-covered. Add it to your library.
We're moving from Ohio to Colorado and wanted a book to give a general overview of Colorado. This book is packed with information and photos and presents it in an easy to understand way. Highly recommend this book.
Beautiful and interesting book. Great history. Bought it for a gift and it was much appreciated.
I live part of the year in Fraser, Colorado so I was interested in the history of the state as well as potential hiking/biking trails. This is a comprehensive, beautifully illustrated, concise history of one of the most beautiful places on earth.
Beautiful coffee table book for our new ski condo
Anyone who lives or has ever lived in Colorado needs to have this book on their coffee table (or anywhere else in their home). Very well written with wonderful pictures and illustrations.
