We have our fair share of new and older Little Golden Books. When I saw this one online I decided to buy it right away for our children. I am so glad I did, it has now become one of my favorite Little Golden Books ever!This book (with an original copyright of 1960) is informative and adorable at the same time. The artwork is bright and colorful to capture children's attention. The explanations are brief enough for each page, but still tell quite a bit. The book starts out by giving a couple explanations of why we carry or fly our flag. Then it goes on to tell you about how our flag came about. It explains about the thirteen colonies, what the original flag's stripes and stars symbolized, where it was carried in to battle, how there was the Confederate flag, and then how we had 48 stars for along time until Alaska and Hawaii became states. It was a good review for me as I read it to our children, and I liked the last three pages too: rules for how to carry or fly the flag, times when you salute the flag, and the Pledge of Allegiance.Overall a great book that would be perfect for any household or preschool to have!
An excellent primer on the history of the flag. I expected it to be kind of patriotic propaganda, but the book was surprisingly modern and factual. It includes a section at the back about flag etiquette and the text of the Pledge of Allegiance. My four year old enjoys it but I think it would be appropriate for older kids looking for information as well.
I couldnt finish reading this book to my kids the first time. I cried, thinking of all the forefathers sacrificed. Also for all our military men and woman have sacrificed for our flag. Thank you for making this book for children to understand!

My 2.5 year old and 4.5 year old have developed a strong interest in American history after a trip we took to Washington, DC this summer. So we bought them this book as an incentive, and of course they love it. It's yet another favorite to add to our growing collection of nonfiction Little Golden Books.
A wonderful book! It tells the story of the history of the American flag and how it came to be. I think this is a great book for young children as a way to introduce them to the history of America and what our flag represents.
This is a must have book for anyone wanted to teach a little history about our foundation as a country and out symbol. The book is well written and held the interest of my 5 and 4 year old. I even learned some new stuff reading it to them. I love giving them chances to learn about our history and this great country we live in. I want them to have pride in it! And this is a great book to add to any collection.
My two year old son has a fascination with the flag. We bought this book so that he would have some flags to look at while in the house. He sits there for long periods of time pointing to the flags and "commenting" enthusiastically in his gibberish. When we are done with the book he wants to see it again and again--he even likes to have this book in bed with him. The pictures are bright and colorful. The text is simple and easy to follow; it is a nice first exposure to the history of the flag and the United States. This will be one of our son's favorites for a long time.
