This book is a wonderful corrective to the narrative of Islam as new to or different from other religions in the United States. Dr. Spellberg is extremely well-versed in the history of religion in America, as well as U.S. history and Islamic studies. The book is useful for beginners to the topic, as well as adding nuance and new information to scholars already engaged with the field. I also use it in my higher-level high school classes.
A compelling and well argued expose on religious freedom in the United States. Spellberg focused primarily on Islam but her narrative applies equally to Judaism, Catholicism, "Paganism," and "Deism."Spellberg also concludes the book discussing the lingering bigotry and revisionist history used against American Muslims. One need only look at some of the one-star reviews of this text as support Spellberg's argument.
It was the most interesting book I've read in a long time. it's a book everyone should read re history of freedom of religion as our forefathers saw it and why this freedom was important to them!!

Not on the scale of the Jefferson Bible. I would have preferred his own version of what the Qur'an meant to him. In the preface the author talks about how cool it was that our country's ancestors were eager to learn about other major religions - and I quite agree - instead of wholesale turning away from the knowledge and message in the Qur'an and other holy books - we all must learn from all the great texts and move forward. Ban or disrespecting any set of people's beliefs shows little humanity. I guess I did get more out of this that I first thought. I need to read it closer now.
